Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has fuelled speculation he will become Manchester United’s new manager on a permanent basis by confirming he no longer has a contract with Molde.Solskjaer is widely considered the favourite to succeed Jose Mourinho in the Old Trafford dugout having done a truly superb job since taking charge on an interim basis last December.2

United have won 13 of 16 matches since Solskjaer took charge

United have suffered defeat just once under their former striker, and they’ve risen into the Premier League’s top four and progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.Solskjaer joined the Red Devils from Molde and it was believed he would return to the Norwegian club when the Premier League season ends in May, with Oystein Neerland, the Molde chief executive, saying they were happy to ‘lend’ their manager to United.Last week Neerland was quoted as saying the 46-year-old was only with United ‘until the end of the season’ and still hoped that he would return to Molde – but Solskjaer has muddied the waters somewhat. Speaking to the Fotballklubben podcast, Solskjaer said: “I’m not sure how it works. I think the contract is expired and that I’m now under contract with Manchester United. I think we need a new contract there (at Molde).”Solskjaer is understood to have signed a deal with United until the end of the season and that any return to Molde would be down to the club and manager to agree.2

It is believed a manager cannot have contracts with two different teams at the same time. Just weeks before taking the temporary job at United, Solskjaer signed a three-year deal to extend his second spell with Molde.The Norwegian is the overriding bookmakers’ favourite to permanently succeed Mourinho and leads his side out against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday.United lost the first leg 2-0 in a performance that tempered expectations at Old Trafford after Solskjaer’s brilliant start in the dugout.
